SH20 Waterview Connection Auckland, 2009-2011

Brown Ltd were asked by NZTA to lead the landscape architecture thinking for the new ‘driven tunnel’ approach to completion of Auckland’s Western Ring Route at Waterview, working as part of the urban design team for the project.  This highly visible project was tasked with representing the best and most modern thinking of any of the motorway projects to date.  The landscape architecture team created a suite of built structures building on and strengthening the ‘volcanic highway’ theme initiated on the Mt Roskill section of the route.  The scope of work was extensive and included significant open space network planning in order to assess potential effects and determine suitable mitigation, as well as creation of the route’s ‘landscape elements’ such as noise and retaining walls, stormwater ponds, cycleways and pedestrian connections, sign gantries and planting.  The landscape architecture component culminated in appearance at the Board of Inquiry, on open space matters for the project.
